Wam Bam, Damn Van. No Regrets, Got The Jam.

I’ve got this thing with cars conking out on me.  If they’re not running out of fuel, they’re running out of battery juice.  What’s up with that?  Ha.

So, I get this audition to join a band on Friday.  Schedules had fluctuated over the last few weeks and it was hard to get together.  Finally, both sides available to meet.  Only problem is, no where to audition on this particular night.  Being anxious to know whether my voice was going to be good enough and if it were a yay or nay so I can move on one way or another, a solution found-problem solved.

Ends up I take my mom’s minivan.  Drive to Yorktown.  Meet Rich (the guitarist) in the parking lot.  He pulls out his acoustic guitar and hops into the minivan.  I whip out my laptop which I downloaded some of the songs he asked me to prepare and off we went.  Him playing guitar and me with song.

Only thing is, after singing and chatting, I forgot that the inside lights were using up the battery.  Yes.  Battery dead.  Was it a stormy rainy night outside?  Oh yes.  Of course!

Long story short.  Got a jump from Triple A (AAA) and I also got the gig.

Rich and I shared a beer while waiting on AAA and discussed the details of the band and expectations.  Rich has already written a song for another band that was a “hit” some years back.  He’s serious about his music and has never worked a day in his life outside of music paying his way.

I am a little trepedatious because even though he’s had rock, country, latin bands and the like in the past, he wants this band to be Blues.  Rock Blues like Susan Tedeshi, Bonnie Raitte, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Ray Vaughn etc.  At first, I really didn’t think I was cut out for that but…the more I worked it and got use to it, I saw it may be right up my alley (hopefully!).

I’m gonna have to bring up those emotions that I have tried so hard to squander and rid because they didn’t name it the Bluuuuuuuuuuues for nothin’ and I’m gonna have to give it justice.  Lyrics like “You were a fool to ever leave me….I was a fool to let you go” or “I miss the sweet taste of your lips” or “Love me like a Man”.  Now, that’s what I’m talkin’ about!

So Rich is very serious as this is how he earns money.  Looks like I have to kick it up a notch and will probably learn a heck of alot.
